AVIAN LLC is excited to announce it will be the title sponsor of the 2013 Solomons Plein Air Festival. ‘En plein air’ is a French expression which means “in the open air”, and is often used to describe the act of painting outdoors rather than in a studio where the influence of changing light and the effects of light on color can be explored. Today, plein air painting is flourishing as its’ own art form. Artists come together for “paint outs” and competitions to hone their skills. Landscape painters of all skill levels are finding plein air painting a rewarding and powerful experience.
Officially named the AVIAN Solomons Plein Air Festival, this year’s festival will be an open air painting extravaganza that allows more than 20 artists from all over the East Coast the opportunity to enjoy not only painting but sharing their creativity with the public. To the viewers, this art form can be very exciting because it invites them into the creative process: the sight, sound, and even smell of the artists’ world. The competitive side of the process pits artists against each other for prizes awarded after four days of painting “en plein air” (outside on location). The paintings will be sold at an auction on September 21st from 6-9 pm with all proceeds going to the Solomons Business Association and the College of Southern Maryland scholarship fund.
The event takes place on the picturesque landscapes of Solomons Island and in the nearby areas of Solomons and Dowell, Calvert County. It will run from September 18th to September 21st. Located where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay, Solomons Island is a community of historic waterfront buildings, cottages, workboats, marinas and more.
