When more than half of your workforce is retired military, providing the highest level of flexibility to active National Guard or Reserve employees isn’t considered an added benefit, it is part of your creed.

The Maryland Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) presented AVIAN LLC with its Above and Beyond Award during an April 12 banquet.

The award from ESGR, a staff group of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, recognizes employers who go above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, by providing their Guard and Reserve employees with additional, non-mandated benefits.

Employer support enhances retention rates in the Armed Forces and in the end, strengthens our national security, ESGR states.

“It’s not above and beyond when it’s the right thing to do,” said Kevin Switick, a co-owner of AVIAN LLC. “As a retired naval officer, I understand the honor, courage and commitment involved with being a member of the Armed Forces and I am willing to do anything possible to support our employees on guard or reserve duty.”

AVIAN was nominated by Navy reservist and AVIAN employee, Cmdr. Eric Flagg.

“The company understands the sacrifices reserve members make and the dual-career difficulties we overcome,” Flagg wrote in his nomination. “The support I receive from AVIAN LLC is extraordinary.”

In addition to flexibility in work schedules, and constant communication, AVIAN provides care packages to mobilized employees and offers help to their family members in the form of lawn mowing, car washing and other tasks that may require support.

We appreciate the sacrifices that members of the National Guard and Reserve make, as well as the day-to-day sacrifice of their families, to preserve the freedom and liberties that all Americans enjoy,” said Jeff Sherman, AVIAN president. “If AVIAN can make a small contribution to show our gratitude, it is well worth it.”

AVIAN was one of 26 employers’ across the state of Maryland to receive an Above and Beyond Award. Out of 250 applicants, one out of every eight received an award.
